"Woodcuts and Watercolors"

Ellen Corddry

May 29 - June 25

Saturday, June 10 from 6 - 10 PM

The reception will be in conjunction with the Ellicott City Art Hop on June 10, when the art galleries and art-related shops in town will stay open later into the evening and host various events at their locations.  At Artists’ Gallery, Corddry will demonstrate the process of designing a woodcut, transferring the design to the wood block, and cutting the wood. She will also make a few small prints on the spot.  The demo will take place from 6:30-7:00 PM.

Corddry’s work was recently featured in a pop-up exhibit on the Maryland Public Television show, “Artworks” (www.mpt.org/programs/artworks-season5/) and she has exhibited extensively throughout Maryland.  She has also illustrated several books.

A graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Corddry often combines watercolors and woodcuts, juxtaposing the heavy, black lines of the woodcut with the translucence of watercolor. “I like the flexibility and immediacy of watercolor, which can be mixed with collage, pastels and crayons for added depth and texture. The woodcut allows for the pleasure of cutting into wood and the making of prints,” commented Corddry.
