Jing-Jy Chen

As a longtime Howard County resident and teacher, Jing-Jy Chen was born in Tainan, Taiwan. She received her B.A. in Chinese literature from Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan, and her M.Ed. from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York.

With her Asian heritage, free mind, wide imagination, and an eye for finding nature’s internal beauty, her artwork presents a fresh expression of the world surrounding us. Before even picking up the brush, she studies and ponders the objects carefully to present her interpretation of the internal spirit. Her work, embodies the spirit and vitality of a rich Asian tradition, is characterized by bold brushstrokes that combines a subtle use of colors. Her pieces are studies in the balance between powerful brush strokes and negative space. What is left unsaid is as powerful as what is expressed.

Besides presenting her work in numerous galleries throughout the year, she works as an Artist-in-Residence at Maryland schools annually, teaching students the techniques she uses in the paintings. She works from her home studio in Laurel, Maryland.
