Artist Statement:
Combining earth, metal, and wood with fine craftsmanship, in ways that complement each other, has become my fascination as a ceramic artist. Whether they are wheel-thrown symmetrical vessels or assembled convex/concave vessels with undulating planes, the addition of copper, silver, and wood accents to these wood-fired forms has become my signature approach to ceramics. As the creative process continues to
evolve, I look to nature for interesting textures, earth-tone colors, metals, and woods to create surface treatments that I find exciting and aesthetically stimulating.
Biography:
I graduated in 1975 with a BA in Art from SUNY Plattsburgh, concentrating in photography, ceramics, and drawing. Shortly after graduating, I was fortunate to have had my porcelain reduction crystalline work represented by The Works Gallery (NYC) and The Works Gallery East (East Hampton, NY). From 1977 to 1980, I taught ceramics in upstate New York. In 1978 and 1979, I received two NEA grants while I was cofounder/
publisher/editor of Portfolio—an educational fine art photography publication. My fine art photography was exhibited and published in national shows and publications. In May 1980, I accepted a photography position with the federal government in Bethesda, Maryland. Eight years later, I left the government for the corporate world. After a 30+ year career in creative direction, marketing, photography, and design, I began working full-time as a clay artist. In the summer of 2015, I launched my website
(www.gregholmesstudio.com) and began showing my ceramic work to the public.
Since 2016, I have served as Vice President of Programs for the Montgomery Potter’s Guild (Maryland’s largest and oldest ceramic guild) and previously served three years (2012-2015) as Co-President of the Guild.
